Lerwick Harbour, with modern, versatile facilities for a wide variety of users, is the principal commercial port for Shetland and a key component in the islands’ economy. At the crossroads of the North Sea and North-east Atlantic, Lerwick Harbour is Britain’s “Top Port” – the most northerly commercial harbour in the country. With two entrances, the sheltered, deep-water port is open to shipping in all weathers and operates around the clock, handling over 5,000 vessels annually.

The company began life on 3 April 1900 as Lowestoft Steam Herring Drifters Company Limited, and traded under that name until 1943 when a number of its vessels (all at the time on Admiralty service) were sold to the Boston Group. The remaining vessels were sold to Harold Brabner Jackson and transferred back to the company under its amended name Lowestoft Herring Drifters Limited. The company continued trading under that name until 21 October 1970 when the name was changed to L.H.D Limited. Following the acquisition of the local net manufacturing and repair company D & A Duthie, a new subsidiary company L.H.D Net Mending Limited was set up on 5 May 1969 to continue the net manufacture and repair business and expand the range of supplies and services offered to its customers. L.H.D Net Mending Ltd changed its name to L.H.D Marine Supplies on 27 September 1996.

From Monday 7th June 2022, the opening hours of the public toilets at Harbour House in Lerwick are to be extended, to open from 8am to 9pm daily, seven days a week. Shower facilities at the same location are also being re-opened, since closing at the start of the pandemic. Users are asked to bring their own towels if possible, although towels will available to hire, which will be quarantined for 48 hours before being washed.
