Lunna Kirk

Lunna Kirk, built in 1753, is the oldest church in Shetland still in use. A leper hole in the outside wall once let sufferers hear the service without entering. In 1940 the bare and inaccessible Lunna estate became the first base of the secret Norwegian-Shetland operation that became known as the Shetland Bus. The fishing boats lay in Lunna Voe; the men slept in Lunna House. Wreaths are still laid in the kirkyard each year for the 44 Norwegians who never came back.
