Eshaness Lighthouse

The squat white tower on Eshaness was designed in 1929 by David A. Stevenson — cousin of Robert Louis — and was the last manned lighthouse built in Shetland. It stands on a 60-metre cliff that takes the full brunt of the Atlantic, where storm waves throw spray clean over the lantern room. The light was automated in 1974. The keeper's cottage was bought and lived in for many years by photographer Sandra Sutherland; the cliffs around it are now one of the most photographed coastlines in the islands.
